Security Challenges of Small States

Abstract

The concept of Security has a vital role in the study of international

relations. This concept is old as human civilization. It has different

meanings in different phases of history. However, there have been sea

changes in the interpretation of security matters. The traditional state-

centric security has transferred into a modern human-centric approach.

But the small states are always threatened by it in different forms and

nature. As a precondition for sustainable political, economic, and social

development, small states are always tortured by several internal and

external factors. So, this article overviews the various security

challenges faced by small states.

Introduction

The concept of security is taken as the most sensitive and

important issue for every individual, society, and country as well

|Major themes were the need to rethink the structure of the Nigerian state, identify means of strengthening national identity, while harnessing the aspirations of youth to advance governance reform, create more accountability within the security services, and avoid the militarization of every security challenge.|

There has been a spate of attacks on human lives and property in Eket and it calls for some vigilance and adherence on our part.

Eket aborigines are advised to be with an Identity at all times of at least a voters card or national ID card and get home early. That would mean no clubbing for the young guys and no partying.

Business centers like shopping malls, eateries, and most establishments fold up before dark.

Of recent, two well-known supermarkets were rubbed. One of which is Day by Day located along Eket Oron road, adjacent to Girls' High Secondary school in Ikot Ibiok. The robbery attack was by 21WAT or 9 pm by Nigerian time. 

According to a narration of a victim, he said a sales boy was shot dead on trying to stop one of the robbers from carrying a bag of rice of about 50kg even after everyone, including his boss, was ordered to lay prostrate on the floor.

It could tend to be quite a difficult situation as there is no countering decisive security measure to curb series of robberies or wipe it out entirely, even as the recent incident undermined the already existing measure – where motorcyclists were only allowed from the hours of 6 am to 6 pm.

Well, some blame it on the teeming masses of unemployed youths and underdevelopment, while others post to bad government. Most people liken the incident of robbery to the intensification of unemployment in the state.

Generally, Nigeria faces a profusion of security challenges running down from violent extremism to farmer-herder conflict, banditry,  among others. 

Before now, experts representing diplomatic, scholarly, and practitioner perspectives have been discussing the links between these security challenges and Nigeria’s backup abased state institutions.

Currently, indigenous are also wary of crowded places, and if possible avoid them for safety.

Parents are to meet more attention to their children - school runs, evening play, visits.
